I moved to Belize in 1991 after living in Massachusetts for 48 years. I have been working with wood most of my adult life. During the mid 60's to the mid 70's I owned and operated a fruit orchard, growing mostly apples. For the rest of the 70's I was engaged in residential tree work. The 80's saw me running a land clearing and logging operation. I continued that work here in Belize until a few years ago.
Up until then I had turned during the rainy season when we couldn't get into the bush. For the past 8 years I have been turning full time.
The first time I visited a saw mill and watched the different woods come down the green chain showing their beautiful colors I knew I had to get a lathe. I was fortunate to be working in the bush and had the pick of the pile. I am still amazed by the variety and it's always fun to open something new, to try it on the lathe, see how it cuts, how it sands and how it takes a finish. Occasionally I get an odd ball tree that even my friends in the forestry department and the local saw mills can't identify. Another new "Mystery wood" that is probably more common further south.
I'm in a pretty low tech environment here and have only a basic shop. As a result I don't do hi-tech turning. I enjoy hunting for odd species and individual pieces to create one of a kind items.
We took a pretty good hit from Hurricane Dean in August of 2008 and I am still bringing in wood from villages in the area. Most people are only too glad to have the damaged trees removed from their yard or farm.
I hope you will take the time to look through my Current Products and the Archive Galleries of my past work and see some varieties you may have never seen before.
